Sacrifice / त्याग
One important thing that churned out of our conversation was sacrifice.
To be an adult, you have to sacrifice. Sacrifice is like a tryst with a demon, where you surrender yourself, or parts of yourself, to become a better version of yourself.
In childhood, we want everything without sacrificing anything. We want all the things we desire, and we don't want to pay any price for them. But as we grow up, we start understanding that everything has a value and everything has a price to pay.
If you can't sacrifice, you can't get anything.
Even in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, there is a dialogue: “Kuch na kuch toh chhootega hi, Kabir, chahe tum kuch bhi kar lo.”
Something will be left behind, no matter what you do.
So choose what you want in life. And once you choose, you have to sacrifice for it.
You have to sacrifice immediate gratification in order to become a better human being. You have to sacrifice the things that consume your time in order to build something meaningful with your time. You have to sacrifice the need for people's attention in order to become yourself. You have to sacrifice comfort in order to grow.
Sacrifice is the key.
But the thing is, you have to choose what you need to sacrifice, because you don't have to sacrifice everything. It is foolish to sacrifice everything just for the sake of sacrifice.
Sometimes, however, you do have to sacrifice almost everything to build something from scratch.
Sacrifice is not a one-day ritual. It is a daily, slow-burning pain.
You have to endure it every day. And then, slowly, it becomes a habit. The pain starts to fade away. What once felt like a sacrifice becomes a part of your life.
Maybe that is what growing up is: understanding that you cannot have everything, and then consciously choosing what you are willing to give up.
Because if you can't sacrifice things for your goal, your goal becomes the sacrifice.
If you can't pay the price of your goal, eventually, the goal itself becomes the price.
here is a dhh song for it.
